June 27, 2003
Mid 2002 we began to open our first distribution
facility outside the US near Toronto Canada.
We had previously shipped items from our
corporate facility in Kansas City and other
branch facilities around the US to either
our distributor in Canada or on occasion
direct to our customers.
We really had very little experience in
dealing with customs and the paperwork associated
with this and most of the time it was hit
and miss. Our customers arranged their own
customs clearance and we had no control over
the process once it left our doors. This
situation had to be changed once we opened
in Canada and we needed some guidance and
consistency shipping cross border now that
we knew our business in the Canadian market
was about to expand.
I made calls to some logistics and customs
brokers and was becoming very frustrated
at their level of enthusiasm regarding a
new account until I had an appointment with
Universal Logistics. Brenda Munroe gathered
some information from us at the initial meeting
and gave us an overview of what we needed
to do and what Universal
could do for us.
Brenda presented us with a proposal, very
professional and comprehensive in nature.
We decided that if we were running a professional
organization we needed a professional partner
for our logistics in Canada. Universal Logistics
has come through for us time after time.
Once we got our procedures in place the
routing of goods to Canada is now second
nature. All along the way the staff at Universal
Logistics has been there to help. We have
now expanded the use of Universal to help
with customs and shipments from the UK
to Canada and the US. My feeling is we couldn’t
have done this well without a great partner.
