| Importance of
forwarding your NAFTA Certificates of Origin |
|
February 18, 2002
Thank you to everyone who has forwarded
to us valid 2002 Blanket NAFTA Certificates, a step that
is mandatory to ensure your U.S. and Mexico origin goods
are not subject to duty or penalty. If you have not already
sent your NAFTA Certificates, please do so at your earliest
convenience.
Under the Administrative Monetary Penalty
System (AMPS), effective April 2002, there will be severe
penalties for declaring duty-free NAFTA benefits where Certificates
are invalid, or non-existent: 1st infraction - $1,000.00;
2nd infraction - $5,000.00; 3rd infraction - $10,000.00;
Subsequent infractions - $25,000.00.
To avoid paying duty or penalties, Universal
Logistics must have the required NAFTA Certificates, or
a signed waiver stating that your company does possess the
Certificates (verbal or e-mail statements will not be
acceptable by Customs, as they do not contain the required
signature).
When duty is paid at time of import and
a NAFTA Certificate is obtained afterwards, a refund claim
can be submitted on your behalf to Canada Customs and Revenue
Agency (CCRA) to recover the duties paid. The time limit
for this submission is (1) year from the date of import.
Universal Logistics offers a complete
NAFTA Management Service
to help our clients obtain and verify their NAFTA Certificates.
