  Time for NAFTA Renewals

(Toronto, November 17, 2004)… Now is the time to renew Blanket NAFTA Certificates of Origin for the calendar year of 2005.

Shipments claiming preferential treatment without a valid NAFTA Certificate are subject to an AMPS (Administrative Monetary Penalty System) transactional penalty of $1,000 for a first infraction and escalating penalties for repeat infractions.

To avoid potential penalties, shipments arriving in Canada without a valid NAFTA Certificate will be subject to duty upon import.  Remember, a 2004 Blanket Certificate is not valid for 2005 shipments.

If a Certificate is obtained post import, a claim to recover the duties paid may be presented to the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) for up to one year after import. Duty is refundable, penalties are not.
