Quota Elimination on Textiles and Clothing

(Toronto, December 17, 2004)… Under the World Trade Organization (WTO) Agreement on Textiles and Clothing, all quota restrictions on the import of textiles and clothing will be eliminated effective January 1, 2005.  Export Licences will no longer be required for shipments exported to Canada after January 1, 2005.

Shipments leaving their country of origin in 2004 will still be subject to quota restrictions if they are imported in 2005.

As the elimination of quota restrictions will cause challenges for Canadian textile and apparel manufacturers in the global market, the Government is planning to provide relief by eliminating all tariffs on fibres and yarn used by the apparel industry.  For full details, go to this web address: http://www.fin.gc.ca/news04/04-078e.html
