| Elimination of Import Permits for Textiles and Clothing |
|
(Toronto, March 24, 2005)... Import permits will no longer be required for imports of textiles and clothing arriving in Canada effective April 1, 2005 (shipments that physically arrive prior to April 1st will still be subject to import permits).
The Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade (DFAIT) has removed this requirement in response to the removal of all textile and clothing import quotas on January 1, 2005.
There is just one exception: imports that currently require a Tariff Preference Level (TPL) Certificate will still be subject to import permits in order to gain preferential free trade treatment under NAFTA (USA/Mexico), CCFTA (Chile), or CCRFTA (Costa Rica).
Although the import permit requirement is being lifted for textiles and clothing, permits are still required from DFAIT for import shipments of steel valued at greater than $5,000 CDN.
This change does not affect export permits or import permits required by other government departments for non-textile and/or non-clothing imports.
