 Trade dispute with European Union

(Ottawa, June 27, 2005)... The Department of Finance is interested in hearing from anyone who has views on the Department's plan to impose a 10% duty, effective August 1, 2005, on selected imports from the European Union (EU).

On May 1, 2005 an additional ten countries (Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Slovenia, Cyprus and Malta) joined the EU and the duty is considered necessary because when the new members joined they adopted the tariff schedule of the EU that hurts Canadian exports.

The products that would be subject to the 10% duty include Virgin Olive Oil, Mineral Water and Aerated Waters, Blue-veined Cheese, Vermouth, Gin, Spirits obtained by distilling grape wine and Casein.
