| 2010 NAFTA Blanket Certificate Reminder |
|
(Toronto, October 21, 2009)
It is time to renew Blanket NAFTA Certificates of Origin for the calendar year of 2010 if you have not already started this process.
Valid Certificates are required to ensure goods originating in Canada, USA or Mexico are not subject to duty upon import. Moreover, claiming preferential treatment without a valid NAFTA Certificate of Origin on hand would result in the following Administrative Monetary Penalty System (AMPS) fines:
- 1st infraction - $1,000.00
- 2nd infraction - $5,000.00
- 3rd infraction - $10,000.00
- Subsequent infractions - $25,000.00
To avoid potential penalties, shipments arriving in Canada without a valid NAFTA Certificate will be subject to duty upon import. Remember, a 2009 Blanket Certificate is not valid for 2010 shipments.
If a Certificate is obtained post import, a claim to recover the duties paid may be presented to Customs for up to one year after import. Duty is refundable, penalties are not.
For more information, or to free yourself of the responsibility of pursuing your vendors for valid 2010 NAFTA Certificates of Origin under our NAFTA Management Service Option 2, please contact Darren Lair at (905) 882-4880.
