Canada Customs Announces AMPS Grace Period

(Ottawa, October 22, 2001)... The Canada Customs and Revenue Agency (CCRA) will implement the Administrative Monetary Penalty System (AMPS) on October 29, 2001.

AMPS will allow the CCRA to impose penalties to those importers that are non-compliant
with current CCRA rules and regulations.

Penalties will apply to certain aspects of the Customs Self Assessment (CSA) program from the outset. But in all other areas a grace period will apply until April 2002, because the CCRA understands that some exporters and importers need more time to fully understand their obligations under AMPS.

For your reference, a detailed article on AMPS was prepared by Universal Logistics for the September 2001 issue of Woodworking magazine.
