| Strike threat
at U.S. west coast ports |
|
(Toronto, June 27, 2002)
Major ports on the U.S. west coast, including Los
Angeles, Long Beach and Oakland, could be hit by work slowdowns
if negotiations between port authorities and the union break
down.
If the slowdowns lead to a strike or lockout, the Port
of Vancouver is expected to receive diverted U.S. cargo.
However, the Port of Vancouver has indicated that freight
for current customers will take priority over any diverted
cargo.
The contract between the International Longshore and Warehouse
Union (ILWU) and the west coast terminal operators expires
on July 1st.
