Port Lockout Continues |
|
(Toronto, October 3, 2002)
The Pacific Maritime Association
(PMA) is continuing the lockout of International Longshore
and Warehouse Union (ILWU) members at 29 U.S. West Coast
ports. This action has ceased all import and export
activity at ports along the U.S. West Coast.
Most ocean vessels are berthed at various U.S. West Coast
ports or anchored offshore awaiting an end to the lockout.
The U.S. Coast Guard has set up massive "holding areas"
in deeper waters offshore to accommodate the influx of vessels.
U.S. Railroads have also ceased to accept westbound international
traffic until a resolution is reached.
Federal mediated contract talks broke down Tuesday, but
are set to resume today. There is also increasing pressure
on U.S. President George Bush to intervene immediately,
as this shutdown is costing the U.S. economy approximately
one billion dollars per day.
