Continues at CN Brampton Intermodal Terminal |
|
(Toronto, September 10, 2003)
A
meeting of steamship lines, freight forwarders, carriers
and drivers failed to come up with a solution to excessive
wait times at CN's Brampton terminal.
Carriers at the meeting appeared to agree almost unanimously
to boycott CN's terminal, but asked drivers to service
customers going through CP lines. However, there are problems
at CP terminals as well.
Drivers said they will not go back to work until they
have a signed contract and are compensated for time spent
waiting in the rail yard.
"The appointment system that seems to have worked
for the port of Vancouver is not working out at all at
CN Brampton," says the Canadian International Freight
Forwarders Association. "There are simply too many
truckers, too many containers and not enough appointment
slots. Some truckers cannot even log in to the CN website
to get an appointment due to the high volume of hits."
"Montreal's CP terminal was reported to have truck
line-ups on Monday morning and waiting times in excess
of 3 hours. On the West coast, CP's backlog has caused
carriers to switch to CN," CIFFA said.
"Containers just keep piling up as ships and trains
keep arriving. Ships and rails work 24/7 whereas trade
is still on a 5 day work week schedule."
Additional Trade
Alerts will be issued as the situation evolves.
