| Canada imposes
import restrictions on USA animal products |

(Toronto, December 29, 2003)
The
Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has implemented
precautionary restrictions on a range of animal related
products imported from the U.S., following the positive
testing of Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE), known
more commonly as "Mad Cow Disease", on a farm
in Washington State on December 23, 2003.

Any products containing rendered animal protein including
blood meal, meat and bone meal, etc. from any species including
porcine or avian from the USA are also temporarily suspended.
Examples of these products include:
- pet foods
- fertilizers
- livestock, animal feeds containing rendered animal
proteins
- tallow
USA origin milk, milk products, ruminant hide-derived
products and pet chews are examples of items that are not
subject to the import restrictions.
