| CN operations
plagued by strike, weather problems and derailment |
|
(Toronto,
February 24, 2004)
Significant delays are
likely at CN terminals across Canada due to the combined
impact of labour, weather and operations problems.
On the labour front, the problem is that most cartage
companies refuse to cross picket lines set up by striking
CN workers. There are reports that some domestic
shipment movements are proceeding, but all international
cargo shipments
have stopped, mainly because the carriers fear they will
be targeted for retribution if they cross the picket line.
Nevertheless, CN has obtained a court injunction that
prevents anyone from obstructing passage of any person
or vehicle at the following CN yards: Montreal, Toronto,
Winnipeg and Edmonton. A similar injunction is being sought
for the Vancouver Terminal.
CN trains continue to operate with little delay, but this
is not expected to last because the problems at the terminal
will soon cause a gridlock.
The situation is made even worse by the many delays caused
by the massive snow storm in Halifax and surrounding areas.
Yet another problem for CN is a reported derailment between
Calgary and Saskatoon, which is adding 16 hours to transit
times.
