(Toronto,
March 9, 2004)
Contract talks between Canadian
National Railway and striking union workers broke off
after the railroad pulled its latest contract offer and
said no further formal negotiations were planned. The
strike by 5,000 CN clerical, maintenance and intermodal
yard workers is now in its 18th day.
CN spokesman Mark Hallman said the company ended negotiations
after representatives of the Canadian Auto Workers rejected
the railroad's ultimatum to accept its latest proposals
by midnight Sunday.
Union negotiator Abe Rosner said the parties were less
than "$10 million apart a one-time expense, not
recurring into the future." Hallman said CN and the
CAW were continuing to engage in "informal dialogue."
CN continues to maintain near-normal operations across
its network, although intermodal traffic has been affected
by reduced numbers of truckers entering the company's terminals to deliver and pick up traffic.
