| Backlogs continue
at Vancouver ports |
|
(Vancouver, May 17, 2004)
Despite
the resolution of labour difficulties last month, backlogs
continue at Vancouver ports, particularly at Deltaport
and Fraser Surrey.
Here is an update:
- Centerm has 17,000 feet on ground, with CP containers
moving out on a more or less regular basis;
- Vanterm has 14,000 feet on ground by end of this
weekend, but is current;
- Deltaport has 55,000 feet of CP and 80,000 feet
of CN bound containers on the ground;
- Fraser Surrey by Wednesday morning had 47,000
feet on ground and was expecting 57,000
feet by the weekend. This,
combined with CP's projected car supply,
will cause a backlog of some 74,000 feet;
In addition, there is a significant imbalance between
Eastbound and Westbound volume. Representatives of
CP and CN say
they are continuously working with all stakeholders
to find short, mid and long-term solutions.
CIFFA has asked the railways to provide, on a regular
basis, a more realistic assessment of the situation. For more information, please call (905) 882-4880, Carlos
Torres, Manager - Transportation Consulting Services.
