| Truckers threaten
to strike |
|
(Toronto, June 29, 2004)
Truckers
in the United States are again calling for a nationwide
strike to protest high fuel prices and working conditions
at the nation's ports.
The strike, slated for the week of June 28 - July 4, coincides
with the start of the peak shipping season.
At the same time, the Teamsters are urging the steamship
lines to compensate drivers for high fuel costs or face
a "long hot summer on the docks".
Drivers say they need higher pay and compensatory fuel
surcharges when the price of diesel spikes. As well, they
want compensation when the drivers wait in line at marine
terminals or when they shuttle containers inside marine
terminals.
