| Continuing
delays at Port of Montreal - Update |
|
(Montreal, August 26, 2004)
Record
import container traffic has exceeded the capacity of the
Port of Montreal, leading to delays of some shipments. "There
are some delays”, confirms Montreal Port Authority
spokesman Michel Turgeon.
The Port of Montreal and other ports in North America
are beginning to feel the effects of high volumes of traffic
that have created severe congestion problems in Europe
over the past few weeks.
Montreal handled a record 5.2 million metric tons of container
cargo in the first half of this year, a 7.9 percent increase
over the previous half-year record in 2003. "June
was our biggest month ever," says Turgeon. "The
preliminary figures for July are continuing very strong."
