 CN union threatens strike action

(Toronto, March 24, 2005)… The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW), which represents CN electrical workers across Canada, is threatening to go on strike, beginning at 12:01 a.m. on Saturday March 26, if a tentative agreement with CN is not reached.

The Canada Industrial Relations Board (CIRB) issued a decision on March 15, 2005, allowing the right to strike or lock-out, provided 72 hours notice is given.  The CIRB deemed the service did not meet the criteria to be deemed essential, as there is no immediate threat to public health or safety.

The United Transportation Union (UTU) has signed a tentative three year labour contract, retroactive to January 1, 2004.  The Teamsters Canada Rail Conference (TCRC) and CN have signed an agreement extending the date on which either party can issue a strike or lockout notice until May 12, 2005.

CN says it will maintain normal rail operations across Canada during any labour disruption by the IBEW.  Employees represented by other unions will be expected to report for work as usual.
