Port of Vancouver backlog "worst ever"

(Vancouver, January 24, 2007)… Delays at the port of Vancouver are the "worst ever", with nearly 7,000 containers stacked at the docks, according to a report in yesterday’s edition of the National Post.  Vessels are waiting several days at anchor to unload and some carriers are diverting to other ports.  The delays are the result of bad weather over the past several weeks in Vancouver, coupled with problems caused by derailments and avalanches on the main rail lines.

At present, CN is dealing with 69,500 metres of backlogged containers at Deltaport and over 30,500 metres at Vanterm.  CP is also dealing with congestion at the port, however to a much lesser extent.

The backlog is not expected to be cleared before mid-February, when there is a lull in the inbound Asia business because of the Chinese New Year.
