| Striving to clear Deltaport backlog (Vancouver) |
|
(Vancouver, January 31, 2007)
Competing container terminals and railroads in the Vancouver area are coming together to help clear the backlog of about 7,000 containers at Deltaport, which is expected to cause delays until mid-February.
The participants in this group effort include The Vancouver Port Authority, Canadian National and Canadian Pacific Railways, The Vancouver and Fraser River Port terminal operators, plus various steamship lines.
CN, the major rail line serving Deltaport, with 80 percent of the total traffic, has added more trains. CN is also trucking refrigerated containers and dry boxes from Deltaport to Centerm, (a competitor owned by DP World's P&O Ports Canada) for transfer to trains. Containers could also be trucked to the Fraser River's Fraser Surrey Docks terminal for loading on CP Rail trains. Another initiative involves CN and the steamship lines, who are working together on a plan to move vessels from Deltaport to other Vancouver terminals.
More updates will be issued as the situation evolves.
