CN strike continues as CIRB delays decision

(Montreal, February 14, 2007)… The five-day old strike by 2,800 CN Rail workers will likely continue through to next week as the Canada Industrial Relations Board said yesterday it will not rule on whether the strike is illegal until at least February 19.

The board listened to arguments from CN, that the strike is not legal due to the fact Canadian union leaders ordered workers to strike, without the authorization of United Transportation Union International in the U.S. – the certified bargaining agent for the CN rail conductors and yard workers.

Canadian National has been using management in place of the striking workers to keep freight trains moving and says thus far service levels are near "normal."  The union insists, though, that the strike has had a bigger impact on operations than the railroad admits.  There is no doubt however that transit and waiting times are being negatively affected and delays must be taken into consideration.  Adverse weather conditions across Canada are also contributing to delays in rail service.

More updates will be issued as the situation evolves.
