| No signs CN strike will end soon |
|
(Montreal, February 19, 2007)
The strike by CN Rail conductors and yard workers, now heading into its second week, is being further complicated by union infighting. No weekend talks were scheduled between United Transportation Union (UTU) and CN.
CN has also advised that the UTU has refused to re-start bargaining.
We are presently awaiting the Canada Industrial Relations Board ruling on the legality of the strike, which is expected this week.
Meanwhile, the interruption of rail service is causing layoffs and other problems for the automotive sector, grain producers, chemical producers and fertilizer producers.
Labour Minister Jean-Pierre Blackburn says there is no need for government intervention because the labour code has provisions that have worked well in previous similar disputes.
More updates will be issued as the situation evolves.
