Mediator appointed to resolve CN strike

(Montreal, February 20, 2007)… The federal government has announced it wants an immediate resolution of the 10-day-old conductors' strike against Canadian National Railway Co.

"I want the dispute ended in hours, not days," Labour Minister Jean-Pierre Blackburn declared last night after discussing the strike with the cabinet.

The government has appointed a labor mediator and indicated that "all options" are on the table.

Meanwhile, the Canada Industrial Relations Board refused to rule that the strike is illegal and the union replaced its chief negotiator.

There is a lot of precedent for federal back-to-work legislation, especially in the railway sector.  Such laws have been enacted 31 times since 1950, including six times in the rail industry, most recently in 1995.
