(Toronto, December 1, 2008) Operations at Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi International Airport, one of Asia’s key air hubs, continue to be disrupted by anti-government protesters who stormed and occupied the passenger terminal last week. The airport is the nineteenth largest cargo-handling airport in the world, with a throughput of over a million tones of freight last year. It is also the second largest air freight hub in South East Asia, behind Singapore.
The disruption is expected to have a big impact on not only Thailand, but also the surrounding region. Press reports suggest freight is now being routed via Penang International Airport in Malaysia, a diversion that is expected to increase shipping costs by 50%.
