Vancouver port workers threaten to strike in early January

(Vancouver, December 15, 2008)… Negotiations continue to avoid a strike at Canada's West Coast ports, beginning January 2, 2009.  Stephen Brown, the president of the Chamber of Shipping of British Columbia, expressed confidence that a labour disruption will be avoided, but Andy Smith, president of the British Columbia Maritime Employers Association, warned that talks are not going well.

If the port workers do strike, the government could not order them back because Parliament is prorogued until Jan. 27.  Pension payments and working conditions are the key issues in the dispute.
