Reduced load capacities, increased surcharges
for freight on St. Lawrence River
(Markham, July 14, 2010) Several carriers have implemented – or will soon implement – low-water-level surcharges for freight moving through the St Lawrence River, which is at historically low levels as a result of reduced snow and rainfall this year. The surcharges are being introduced to compensate for the reduced load carrying capacity made necessary by the lower water levels.
OOCL, the latest carrier to announce a surcharge, will impose, effective July 19 2010, the following extra costs on all freight moving via the Port of Montreal:
USD $75 per 20’ container
USD $150 per 40’ container.
