A major trade agreement between Canada and the European Union (EU), called the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA), has moved closer to implementation with positive votes by both sides this week. The deal would create common certification for goods and services while decreasing or eliminating existing tariffs on a variety of products, including agricultural products. It would also harmonize environmental and labour standards between the two trading partners.
About 90% of CETA (including tariff reductions) could be implemented as early as April 1, 2017.
The final step for CETA is approval by national and regional parliaments across the EU in order to fully implement the remaining provisions of the Agreement.
