Public feedback requested on proposed food industry tariff cuts

The federal government is inviting public input on the planned elimination of tariffs applied to

certain ingredients

used by Canadian food manufacturers. It is hoped that the tariff cuts will help reduce the cost of production for Canadian food manufacturers. Tariff elimination would apply to all tariffs listed in

Table 1 of the Canada Gazette notice.

All tariffs of

Chapter 20

of the Customs Tariff will also be eliminated, but only when used in Canadian manufacturing.

The tariff items in Table 1 have been selected based on the following factors:

  • Goods covered by these tariff items are used in agri-food processing;
  • Eliminating the tariff on these goods will reduce production costs for Canadian industry; and
  • There is interest from stakeholders in eliminating MFN tariffs on some of these goods to enhance competitiveness.

The descriptions of the tariff items in Table 1 can be found in the current consolidated version of the Customs Tariff or on a recent USDA Gain Report of June 3, 2016.

Submissions should be sent directly to the International Trade Policy Division (email: fin.tariff-tarif.fin@canada.ca; Fax: 613-369-4024) or the Tariff and Trade Policy Section, Department of Finance (Telephone: 613-369-4034 or 613-369-4075) by June 21, 2016.
