U.S. announce 25% tariffs on imports of steel and aluminum - Universal Logistics Trade Alerts - February 12, 2025

Toronto, February 12, 2025

US President Donald Trump issued the following Proclamation, “Adjusting Imports of Steel into the United States” to implement, effective March 12, 2025, a 25% tariff on all imports of steel and aluminum and their derivative products.  Products and tariff numbers of “derivative products” will be published as annexes in the U.S. Federal Register (pending issuance).

The White House issued their fact sheet on President Trump’s restoration of the Section 232 Tariffs.

What we know:

  • Tariffs go into effect March 12, 2025.
  • All previously negotiated agreements with South Korea, Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Mexico, the EU countries, Japan and the UK have been terminated.
  • The Section 232 product exclusion process is terminated immediately.
  • No drawback shall be available with respect to the duties imposed pursuant to this Proclamation.

Canada is expected to issue retaliatory tariffs in the event that these tariffs are implemented.
