Verification of container weight will soon be mandatory

Container ship

New mandatory requirements for container weight verification will become effective on July 1, 2016. The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has adopted the new requirement under the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) Convention to ensure vessels are not dangerously overloaded due to misdeclared container weights.

Shippers can verify the weight of a container in one of two ways:

  • The shipper may weigh or have a third party weigh the packed, sealed container.
  • The shipper or third party can weigh all the cargo, packing and securing materials loaded into a container and add this weight to the tare weight of the container.

Under either method, the declaration of verified weight must be signed and dated by the shipper or by its authorized representative.
