Canada will remove all tariffs on goods from the United States that are covered by the Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA) by September 1, Prime Minister Mark Carney announced this afternoon. Various media outlets are reporting this also pertains to goods currently covered by Tariff Rate Quotas (TRQ) into Canada, as example, poultry, dairy products, eggs, etc., but this has yet to be confirmed.
The Prime Minister said Canada will maintain its tariffs on steel, aluminum and autos as the Liberal government works with the U.S. to craft a new trading relationship between the two countries.
Where goods are normally duty free, but subject to Retaliatory Tariffs, importers should ensure a valid CUSMA Certificate of Origin is obtained, where applicable, to avoid payment of the 25 percent Retaliatory Tariff. Clients of Universal Logistics may take advantage of our CUSMA Management Programs to assist in gathering certificates of origin from suppliers.
In order to be covered by CUSMA, goods must meet the applicable Rules of Origin under the Agreement based upon the HS tariff classification of the finished product (i.e. the product as imported into Canada).
