CBSA Strike Update

CBSA Strike Update - Universal Logistics Trade Alerts - June 5, 2024

Toronto, June 5, 2024

The Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC) have advised a strike will begin at 4pm Friday (June 7th) if a deal isn’t reached in mediation.

Commercial goods will continue to flow across borders – but delays are anticipated.  The border will remain open, as over 90% of Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) frontline workers are deemed an “essential service” and cannot strike, however, increased wait times and service disruptions are expected due to picketing, and possible work to rule action by non-striking CBSA staff.

The Border Services Group is comprised of approximately 11,000 positions at the CBSA that are primarily involved in the planning, development, delivery, or management of the inspection and control of people and goods entering Canada.  9,500 members of the Borders Services Group are represented.

Universal Logistics will continue to process all import release requests in a timely manner in an effort to mitigate any delays that might occur.  Significant delays are anticipated with Trade Programs (including examinations, rulings, drawbacks, refunds and entry adjustments) while travellers crossing the border will likely experience extreme delays.

For more information, please call Brian Rowe, Director – Customs Compliance & Regulatory Affairs at (905) 882-4880, ext. 1213.
