True or false? AMPS penalties only apply to import shipments

Answer: False. Canadian exports are subject to about 17 AMPS (Administrative Monetary Penalty System) infractions.

For example, Exporters are required to report “Export Declarations” electronically to the CBSA on all shipments (with certain exceptions). The penalty for non-report carries the following penalty amounts per non-report:

1st: $500
2nd: $750
3rd and Subsequent: $1,500

Note: most shipments destined to the U.S. are not subject to export reporting.
