US Steel and Aluminum Tariffs still expected to begin March 12th - Universal Logistics Trade Alerts - March 7, 2025

Toronto, March 7, 2025
US President Donald Trump issued the following Proclamations to implement a 25% tariff on all imports of steel and aluminum and their derivative products, effective 12:01 a.m. Eastern Standard Time (EST) March 12, 2025.  Products and tariff numbers of “derivative products” may be found here for Steel and Aluminum.

IMPORTANT: US importers of goods containing steel or aluminum should be sure to review the derivative lists to determine if your finished goods may be subject to a tariff on the steel or aluminum content.

The White House issued their fact sheet on President Trump’s restoration of the Section 232 Tariffs.

What we know:

  • Tariffs go into effect 12:01 a.m. EST March 12, 2025.
  • All previously negotiated agreements with South Korea, Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Mexico, the EU countries, Japan and the UK have been terminated.
  • The Section 232 product exclusion process was terminated February 10, 2025.
  • No drawback shall be available with respect to the duties imposed pursuant to this Proclamation.
